Sakura Wars Franchise Shipped 4 Million Units After Project Sakura Wars Release, Up from 3.8 Million

Today Sega reached out with a press release to announce that the Sakura Wars franchise has passed a new sales milestone.

The press release announces that after the release of Project Sakura Wars (also known in Japan as Shin Sakura Taisen) today, the franchise has shipped over 4 million units cumulatively in Japan.

Considering that the announcement mentions that this is only related to sales in Japan, it likely doesn’t include sales on the west or Sakura Taisen V, which we know as Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love.

Interestingly, this likely means that Project Sakura Wars has shipped about 200,000 units at launch, considering that a press release in April mentioned 3.8 million cumulative shipments by that date.

The Sakura Wars series debuted in 1996 on the Sega Saturn and continued all the way to 2005 with five mainline games and a few spinoffs. OnlySakura Wars: So Long, My Love (the fifth game of the series) was officially localized in English in 2010.

The mainline series remained dormant for fourteen years until today, with the release of Project Sakura Wars.
