Today Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games released a new video showing off upcoming content for the game.

Recommended Videos

The first part of the video showcases the work the team is doing on weather effects.

The upcoming Alpha 3.8 that is scheduled to release this month will include the first pass of weather, on the road to a fully dynamic implementation down the line. It looks really impressive.

The second part of the video introduces the Crusader Ares Ion and the Crusader Ares Inferno.

They’re two variants of a new ships introduced today (for now available only to concierge backers until tomorrow), and they come with a rather interesting concept.

The Ares is basically your space A-10 Warthog. It’s built around a giant gun, and it’s pretty much entirely dedicated to that.

The Ion variant comes with a massive size-7 laser cannonn (basically it’s a capital ship-class weapon) plus aditional coolers and power plants to make it work.

The Inferno variant has a giant size-7 ballistic gatling gun, and uses the real estate not needed for coolers and power plants to add ammo and more armor.

You can also see both of them in the images below the video.

The Ares is basically designed to attack capital ships, tearing down at their shield and then causing massive damage, unless dealt with. A secondary role is against ground targets. It seems like it might be very effective in both roles, but fighting against nimble fighters may prove a lot more challenging.

The concept sale has both the Ion and the Inferno at a $195 (plus VAT) starting price, but as usual, they will be purchasable in game at some point, so you don’t need to actually purchase them with real money unless you want to support the development of Star Citizen.

Looks like many do want tro contribute as the sale propelled the crowdfunding total to over $255 million.

To be more precise, at the moment of this writing it’s at $255,000,181.

The number of registered accounts is now at 2,462,144. As usual, you should keep in mind that not all of them are paying players. The number includes accounts created for Free Fly events like the one that recently ended.

If you want to see more you can check out the impressive gameplay shared at CitizenCon and the second part, showing planet Microtech, the Anvil Carrack, and the Anvil Pisces, and the first wormhole jump to a new system. You can also take a look at the brand new “Theatres of War” Battlefield-like gameplay modemore videos and screenshots showing planet tech v4, Microtech and its capital, New Babbage, and two more panels showcasing the latest ships and prison gameplay.

As a bonus, you can also check out a recording of the cosplay show hosted during Citizencon. It’s quite enjoyable, and the fans in attendance did a great job with their costumes.

For the sake of full disclosure, you should consider that the author of this article has been a Star Citizen backer since the original Kickstarter campaign several years ago.
