Is Star Wars: The Old Republic Worth Playing In 2022?

We’d argue that SWTOR is absolutely worth playing in 2022. When Disney acquired LucasFilm in 2012 they made the controversial decision to purge the ‘Expanded Universe’ content from Star Wars canon. This included the beloved Knights of the Old Republic games. Its sequel SWTOR, however, was allowed to live on.

While SWTOR is technically not considered canon it hasn’t stopped fans from falling in love with its story and characters. Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place 300 years after the Knights of the Old Republic games and focuses on the brutal war between the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic. Over the years SWTOR has released a total of eight expansions continuing its story.

All eight expansions amount to over 1,600 hours of story content and the most recent expansion, Legacy of The Sith just dropped this year. There are no signs of SWTOR slowing down any time soon as Legacy of the Sith is set to be the first chapter of a ten-year saga for Star Wars: The Old Republic. That’s not to mention the insane player stats the game is still achieving in 2022. MMO Populations show that SWTOR still draws in a staggering 213,765 players a day.

The Legacy of the Sith further updated the original story beats, moments, and planets for new players who wanted to start the story at the very beginning. SWTOR also features its own unique planets, and locations, and greatly expands the galactic lore and history between The Jedi and The Sith. The game is improving regularly with new updates adding different combat styles, operations, and events.

The Digging Deeper update that just dropped for the game adds a new operation that sees players go up against a Sith cult and new faction-based storylines as well as improvements to class balance and other quality of life improvements.

Okay, SWTOR isn’t canon. But does that matter? The MMORPG is made by Star Wars fans for Star Wars fans. Bioware Creative Director Charles Boyd has said that SWTOR is supposed to feel like a massive Star Wars-themed DnD campaign, if you want to get some friends and journey to a galaxy far, far away then SWTOR more than delivers on that experience.

Is Star Wars: The Old Republic Free?

Star Wars: The Old Republic is free-to-play as are its first two expansions Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan. However, the remaining expansions are locked behind a SWTOR subscription which is offered to players at various price plans.

That’s everything you need to know about whether Star Wars: The Old Republic is still worth playing in 2022. Be sure to check out the rest of our SWTOR coverage below.
