EVE Online Shooter Goes Offline in May, New FPS on the Way

Bye-bye.

You may not have remembered this, but EVE Online developer CCP Games had a shooter in the same universe called Dust 514. It was free to play, and now come May, it’ll be going offline. On the forums, a CCP representative made this post:

We are very proud of what we’ve learned and accomplished with Dust 514 on PlayStation 3 over the past three years and it is an honor to be a part of such a dedicated community. We consider Dust 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us. Thank you for being a part of Dust 514 on the PlayStation 3. We look forward to the next chapter, and hope you’ll be a part of it and continue the journey with us.

Fans will be able to play the game until the May 30 shutdown date, but won’t be allowed to buy anything from the PSN packs. Players with Aurum can still get items from the in-game marketplace. Loyal players will get “tiered recognition rewards” for their efforts, but more details on that will come later.

In the meantime, developer CCP Shanghai will be working on a new FPS made with Unreal Engine 4 set in New Eden, a star system in the base EVE Online game. It’s supposedly an “evolution of Project Legion”, which was built on dead end tech. The project is still in its early stages, but they hope they’ll have something to show off on April 21 at EVE Fanfest.
