Monster Hunter World is One of Steam’s Biggest New Releases in 2018

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Earlier this year, Monster Hunter World was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to both critical and financial acclaim. Now, almost half a year later, the game is out on Steam and it’s one of the biggest new releases for the platform in 2018.

After just a little over an hour on the Steam Marketplace, Monster Hunter World had already found itself with 240,000 concurrent players online. Right now, it sits at 232,499 concurrent players placing it at spot number four on the Most Played Games On Steam, sitting behind Steam behemoths Dota 2, PUBG and Counter-Strike. It’s unlikely that Monster Hunter World will claim those games’ spots — they’re Steam mainstays at this point — but you never know. With the weekend coming up, it’d be a safe bet to say that those numbers are about to shoot way up.

When it released, it appeared to be gaining steady traction but has since died down a bit. As it stands now, the number of players in the game seem to be just barely declining, likely due to reasons such as work or sleep.

According to GitHyp, Monster Hunter World is ranked number four on Steam in both “Current Players Rank” and “Highest Player Rank.” Its average daily high is 240,872 and its average daily low is 187,005 (because this game released today, those numbers aren’t saying too much, but it will be interesting to see what they are in the coming weeks).

If one thing is certain about this entry in the series, it’s that it doesn’t have plans to slow down anytime soon — it even had a Final Fantasy XIV crossover recently.

Monster Hunter World is the first game in the series to come to PC in the West — there are plenty of Japanese-exclusive titles on PC, though.  It’s also the first mainline game in the series to be released on a PlayStation home console in years. In fact, the last one to release to a PlayStation non-portable system was back in 2006 with Monster Hunter 2’s PS2 release. Since then, it’s had a number of spinoffs that made its way to PlayStation systems, Xbox consoles, the Wii and even handhelds like the 3DS.
