The western launch had been teased at the end of last year by producer and director Fuyuki Hayashi, but today we get the official confirmation and a release date. The game is coming on August 27 for PS4 and will also get a PC port on Steam on top the version on Sony’s console.

The standard edition priced at $59,99 will come with a Summer Collection Costume DLC, and pre-orders for PS4 will also net you a Day One Edition that will include a mini artbook.

If you’re unfamiliar with Crystar, it’s a rather tragic JRPG with a gothic look and a very dark atmosphere in which protagonist Rei has to strike a deal with the Devil and to travel Limbo to try and revive her dead sister Mirei. Defeating the drifting souls of Limbo and crying for their suffering plays a big part in the gameplay and story.

“A girl named Rei and Mirai, her little sister, are dragged into the afterworld of Purgatory by an unknown entity.

Scared and confused, Rei tries to lead them home when they are attacked by a terrible monster.

To protect her little sister, Rei unlocks the strength hidden within her. With it, she fights against the dead Souls of Purgatory.

However, this power turns against her. Rei accidently kills Mirai with her very own hands, thinking she is an enemy.

Devastated, Rei weeps hopelessly at what she has done. Sensing an opportunity, two Demons appear and whisper in her ear…

“If you hunt the wandering Souls in this world and gift us with the tears of your suffering, we will bring Mirai back to life.”

Rei takes their offer and signs a contract with the Demons. Now an Executor of Purgatory, she sets out on the story that shall again and again plunge her into life-threatening battle. All to save the sister she loves.”

Interestingly, the game will be localized with both English voices and subtitles.

With the announcement of Crystar, we also got a trailer, which you can enjoy below alongside a look at the day one edition and a batch of screenshots. Incidentally, the trailer is missing a few frames during the transformation scene at 1:10 compared to the original opening cutscene which you can see here [Thanks for the tip Jackson]. We have contacted Spike Chunsoft to ask for more details on this.

In other Spike Chunsoft news, we also hear that Zanki Zero: Last Beginning will get a demo for PS4 on March 26. No mention has been made of a demo for the PC version of the game.
