Since the start of The Game Awards just a few years ago, there’s been no other show like it; a show that brings in millions of gamers together for one night and one night only to celebrate the best games of the year.
Geoff Keighley, the host, and creator of the awards show has surpassed all of his prior shows in terms of viewership by a boatload. For its 2018 broadcast, The Game Awards more than doubled its viewership to over 26.2 million global live streams, up from a whopping 128% from 2017’s record-setting show of more than 11 million live streams.
Coming from a show that originally only had about 2 million viewers in its first year, these numbers are incredible to see and just demonstrates how video games, are indeed, more popular and better than ever.
Geoff Keighley thinks as such as well:
“Five years in, it’s amazing to see The Game Awards continue to grow both domestically and internationally. These results further validate our focus on an all-digital, no-friction approach of sharing this show globally across more than 45 video platforms, not to mention the growing interest and passion for video games around the world.”
The Game Awards 2018 also saw significant growth across all spectrums including overall votes, social media engagement, and co-streaming:
“The Game Awards program became one of Twitch’s biggest live streams to date with over 1.13 million concurrent viewers watching the program on Twitch at its peak, nearly doubling last year’s Twitch viewership. In total, peak concurrency for the show is estimated to have reached over 4 million global viewers, including more than double the number of concurrent viewers on YouTube compared to the 2017 broadcast.”
To date, here are the live stream numbers for The Game Awards (does not include VOD viewership):
2018: 26.2 Million (Up 128%)
2017: 11.5 Million (Up 202%)
2016: 3.8 Million (Up 65%)
2015: 2.3 Million (Up 23%)
