Kadokawa Games President Yoshimi Yasuda has been sharing plenty of screenshots of the developer’s upcoming mystery visual novel Root Film.
Of course, this also means that we get to see more of the beautiful art of character designer Taro Minoboshi, whom you may know for his art featured in the LovePlus series, God Wars, and LoveR on top of the previous game of the franchise, Root Letter.
Another “star” of the game is the Japanese prefecture of Shimane, which is the rather unique setting of the series, faithfully reproduced. This also results in the inclusion of its mascot Shimanekko, who also appears both in the game and in the screenshots.
If you’re unfamiliar with the game, here’s a handy description:
Root Film is about a TV series, called “Shimane Mystery Drama Project”, which was canceled for an unknown reason 10 years ago. To reboot the project, three teams consisting of a director and an actress have been cast, including 23-year-old Rintaro Yagumo, the main character of the game.
His excitement about this amazing opportunity is quickly curbed, when a horrible murder interrupts their location scouting process. Follow him and a cast of unique and memorable characters by character designer Taro Minoboshi as they are drawn deeper into the thrilling mystery of Root Film.

Root Film has been announced for PS4 and Nintendo Switch and will release in Japan on July 30, 2020. The western release will come courtesy of PQube Games but doesn’t have a release date besides a generic “2020.”
