The Runaways
Marvel’s The Runaways started out as a comic, just like the Umbrella Academy, way back in 2003. It wasn’t until 2017 when Hulu picked it up and adapted the comics into a live-action series. The show follows a group of troubled teenagers (each with their own special abilities) and their parents who are all part of an organization known as The Pride.
During one organization meeting, they discover that their parents are actually supervillains who sacrifice teenagers. In an upscaled act of teenage rebellion, the group flees from their home and band together to put an end to their parent’s evil schemes.
Like the Umbrella Academy, The Runaways is packed with some snazzy action scenes as well as that familial bond that ties these characters together. These teens have a lot of growing up to do, and it’s really more about them learning their way around the world without their parents.

Titans
Titans is a live-action spin on the iconic comic book classic that’s pretty much known for its cartoon adaptation. While the animated series is known for its lighthearted moments, this series takes a more grizzly spin with its edgy group of heroes.
The series still follows the same group of Titans – Robin, Starfire, Beastboy, and Raven – except for one (probably because he’s in the Justice League now). This time around, however, Robin is working together with Raven to stop a calamity from destroying the Earth. Along the way, they meet Beast Boy and Starfire, and they eventually form the kickass crime-fighting group.
The Umbrella Academy and Titans share the same dark undertones despite some of its more easy-going moments. If you’re looking for another superhero show with the same amount of drama, there’s no going wrong here.

The Defenders
Since the MCU, Marvel’s shelled out tons of other heroes on the small screen. Characters like Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Iron Fist have all gotten their own series on Netflix (which are getting cancelled). While the Avengers are busy with their intergalactic threats, we have the Defenders to watch over the city streets.
This Marvel crossover series follows the four aforementioned heroes who team up to take down one common enemy known as The Hand. The Defenders does tie in with the MCU, and while nothing is directly stated, they’re all within the same universe.
Despite its seriousness, this Netflix show does have its fair share of humor and other lighthearted moments between the cast. It’s a more conventional superhero show compared to The Umbrella Academy, but fans will still love it nonetheless.

Doom Patrol
A spin-off of Titans, Doom Patrol is a new series based on the DC comics of the same name. Interestingly enough, The Umbrella Academy was inspired by the series, and it shows.
Basically, the story centers around a group of meta-humans who are taken by a mad scientist and are all thrown together in a mansion. Sound familiar yet? Get this, each of these misfits all have their own unique abilities, which are more like abilities that they never really wanted.
While it sounds like a great superhero show in the making, it really just pokes fun at familiar tropes and takes a more ridiculous approach to things. Doom Patrol has just started airing, so if you’re looking for a fresh new show to watch like The Umbrella Academy, you’ve pretty much found it.

Misfits
Unlike the other shows on this list, Misfits drifts away from the whole superhero subject. Instead, the show centers around a group of young offenders who are tasked with working in a community center program. During their time there, the group suffers from an electrical storm, which leads to them obtaining extraordinary abilities.
Apart from forced labor, the group now needs to learn how to control their strange new powers. It isn’t all about responsibility, however, as Misfits manages to blend in wit and humor thanks to its quirky cast. It’s even worth noting that Klaus from The Umbrella Academy (Robert Sheehan) is in the show as Nathan Young, who also acts as a medium.
Both The Umbrella Academy and Misfits are a wild and weird ride, and it’s something that fans definitely have to watch after the Netflix program. Misfits has already finished airing, so there’s really no better time to watch it.
