PSVR 2 Controller Revealed; Features Haptic Feedback, Finger-Touch Detection, & More

After having pledged its continued commitment to the VR space earlier this year, PlayStation has today unveiled the first images of the controller that will replace the PS Move when PSVR 2 launches in 2022.

The new peripheral is based around an orb-shaped design that allows players to “controller naturally, while playing with a high degree of freedom,” according to the company’s senior vice president, platform planning & management, Hideaki Nishino, in an article over on the PS Blog.

Under the hood, the new controller is packing familiar technology to PS5 owners, including the same haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and analog sticks. But there’s also a unique new functionality in the form of “finger-touch detection.”

Nishino explains:

“The controller can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers. This enables you to make more natural gestures with your hands during gameplay.”

He then signs off with a note that looks forward to seeing how game developers use the new technology moving forward; notably, he confirms that prototype units haven’t yet been distributed yet.
