Fallout 4: How to Steal Without Getting Caught

Take all the things!
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

It’s rather easy to be tempted to steal in Fallout 4. There are tons of resources just sitting around wherever you look. An irradiated box of detergent here, an empty aluminum can there. No matter what it is, chances are that you can probably put it to good use. But if an item’s name is red, that means it belongs to someone. Stealing something as trivial as an old tray is enough to get you killed in Fallout 4’s sprawling Wasteland. So what is a Vault Dweller to do?

It turns out there is a way to steal items without having to worry about the repercussions. Keep in mind that this will only work on on items not in a container (unless the container is light enough for you to pick up and move, which is rare).

All you need to do is pick up an item without actually adding it to your inventory. Once you have the object you desire in your grasp, just run somewhere safe and crouch so it says ‘Hidden.’ Now just drop the item on the floor and pick it up as you normally would. Because you’re ‘Hidden’, nobody can see you and picking up the item raises no suspicions.

Now you can steal all the things out in the open without having to worry about hurting someone’s feelings… or getting yourself killed over a can. So get out there and start “collecting” some resources.

Hopefully you’ll only use this power for good. Are you enjoying your brand new, uninhibited thieving sprees? Feel free to let us know in the comments below.
