After nearly half a year of absolute silence from Sega in Sonic’s 30th anniversary year about a new Sonic the Hedgehog game, it seems like the drought will likely be over in two days. Sega has announced that they are streaming an event called, Sonic Central – which sounds kind of like a Sonic direct, and the stream will showcase upcoming “projects, partnerships, and events to celebrate Sonic’s 30th anniversary.
The stream will take place at 12:00 p.m. ET on May 27 on Twitch and YouTube, and while it does not explicitly say there will be new games shown (so I guess brace yourself for that worst-case scenario), it would be incredibly odd and surprising if Sega did not show up with something new on the games front considering the anniversary year and time that has past since Sega put out a new Sonic game.
It’s been an incredibly long time since Sega has put out anything major in the Sonic franchise. Sonic Mania Plus released back in 2018, and it was basically an expansion to a game that released in 2017. Sonic Mania is a celebrated return to the series 2D Sega Genesis roots.
On the other hand, the last 3D game, Sonic Forces, received a mixed reception, at best. Sonic Forces was a major step back from previous 3D efforts such as Sonic Generations which appeared to show that Sonic was moving in a positive direction on the 3D front.
Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long to see what the future holds for Sonic.
