Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon-rival series, Bandai Namco released an announcement trailer for the upcoming Digimon Survive, declaring its 2019 release date window. The trailer, which features various looks at the game’s core mechanics and branching story line options, is beautifully animated, giving players various looks at the both the real world and the ever iconic digital world.

A more gritty view of the Digimon series, Digimon Survive capitalizes on the aspect of surviving this new, incredibly dangerous trek into the digital world. The trailer begins with stunning background art of “nostalgic” areas around the game, showing off the many aspects of childish wonder and innocence that will most likely be explored throughout your journey.  However, it quickly cuts to the phrase, “Little did they know in this world danger and danger awaits,” before delving into several dialogue scenes with interesting-looking characters about mysterious disappearances.

The trailer also ominously informs players that decisions must be made so that characters can survive and that this is indeed a story of these Digimon tamers attempting to escape a “bizarre dimension.” As one final punch to show the rather unique Fire Emble-like survival take on the Digimon series, the trailer wraps up with, “This is a story of survival.”

As we reported earlier, Digimon Survive looks to operate through grid-based combat. The myriad of collectible digital monsters won’t remain digivolved once the battle is over and will instead consume an energy gauge when they digivolve during combat.

Digimon Survive will be released in 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC.
