The editor appears to be capable to populate an open world in a natural but artist-driven way, and it’s the Luminous Engine’s approach to procedural generation.

The video was presented during a panel at CEDEC 2020, which is basically Japan’s version of the Game Developers Conference.

You can watch it below.

Here’s how the developer describes the tool.

“Auto-generating the world using our proprietary engine, Luminous Engine, as demonstrated by Luminous Productions at CEDEC2020. Filling an Open World in a Natural yet Intentional Way This showcase walks you through the Luminous Engine’s approach to procedural generation.”

At the moment Luminous Productions is known to be working on the game for PS5 and PC code-named Project Athia, which was teased during the Sony-hosted presentation of the games for its console on June 11.

Here’s how Square Enix describes the mysterious game.

“Designed for PS5, PROJECT ATHIA will harness the full power of the console and demonstrates Luminous Productions’ philosophy to provide a gaming experience like never before, fusing together the latest technology with art.

PROJECT ATHIA will transport players to a world filled with beauty and dismay as they set upon a thrilling story-led, action-packed adventure which can be twisted, tempestuous and forbidding.”

Proud weeb hailing from sunny (not as much as people think) Italy and long-standing gamer since the age of Mattel Intellivision and Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Definitely a multi-platform gamer, he still holds the old dear PC nearest to his heart, while not disregarding any console on the market. RPGs (of any nationality), MMORPGs, and visual novels are his daily bread, but he enjoys almost every other genre, prominently racing simulators, action and sandbox games. He is also one of the few surviving fans on Earth of the flight simulator genre.
