Indie darling Hollow Knight is no longer getting a physical release next year. Initially announced back in August, the partnership between Team Cherry and Skybound Games, who was handling publishing duties, is now over, the publisher stated on Twitter.

Developer Team Cherry also put up a post regarding the cancellation of Hollow Knight’s physical edition on its website, going into further detail. “We’re regretfully announcing the cancellation of physical copies of Hollow Knight and our partnership with Skybound Games.  As a team of 3 people still in intensive production of Hollow Knight, taking the game into the retail space (even with the extensive assistance of Skybound) proved more work than we could reasonably manage.”, the post reads. All hope is not lost, however. The post goes on saying that the developer will be looking for ways to release Hollow Knight physically in the future, albeit in smaller quantities.

Hollow Knight quickly gathered acclaim following its 2017 PC release. Taking a good serving of Metroidvania and sprinkling some Dark Souls on top, the title put players on a journey through the forgotten kingdom of Hallownest and its several distinct areas inhabited by strangely charismatic bugs. Since its 2017 release, the title has received four free updates which expanded it with new areas, challenges and bosses. Hollow Knight also made its way to the Nintendo Switch back in June of this year, followed by a September release on PS4 and Xbox One.
