Thronebreaker is a story-focused card game set in the Witcher universe and developed by CD Projekt Red. Instead of Geralt, the game follows Meve, Queen of Lyria and Rivia, as she battles the invading Nilfgaardian empire and seeks to defend her people.

The game uses mechanics inspired by Gwent, a card game playable in Witcher 3 that was later made into a stand-alone game. The cards are used to simulate real battles Meve’s army is fighting. While there are a few changes, anyone who has spent time with Gwent will undoubtedly feel at home in Thronebreaker.

While the game’s battles are with cards, it’s exploration is more like traditional RPGs. Outside of battle, the player will move Meve around on a top-down map where they can explore and converse with NPCs.

Additionally, Thronebreaker contains narrative choices, side quests, skill upgrades, and many other qualities you’d expect from an RPG, but not necessarily from a card game.  The game’s visuals are also a departure, taking a stylized graphic novel-like design rather than the Witcher 3’s more realistic approach.

With CD Projekt Red hard at work on Cyberpunk 2077, it’s possible Thronebreaker might be that last game we see in the Witcher universe for some time. Players can get their hands on the game Oct. 23 on PC or Dec. 4 on Xbox One and PS4.
