What Does Sword Color Mean in Demon Slayer?

An explanation of what sword colors in Demon Slayer mean.

The Nichirin Swords are the heart of the Demon Slayer Corps. Without these special blades, no one would be able to stop the dangerous demons of the world. Each weapon comes from Mt. Yoko, a mountain bathed in the sunlight to produce the sun-absorbing steel. Additionally, what makes this weapon genuinely remarkable is its color transformation abilities. So, what does sword color mean in Demon Slayer? Let’s go over its significance to give you a better understanding.

Sword Color in Demon Slayer Explained

The Nichirin Sword is also known as the “Color Changing Sword” since the appearance of the blade changes based on the bearer. The sword color’s meaning directly links to the wielder’s power; it is almost like a reflection of their abilities and personality. For example, Kyojuro Rengoku’s strength is fire, making his sword color red like his flames.

We can look at other Demon Slayer Corp members to get a clearer picture of what sword colors mean. In particular, Zenitsu Agatsuma is often associated with the color yellow because of his hair, clothing, and Thunder Breathing technique. His weapon is no different, especially with the lightning bolt artwork engraved in the steel.

Sometimes a sword color’s meaning isn’t as transparent as those mentioned above. For instance, Sanemi Shinazugawa’s Nichirin blade is green because of his Wind Breathing powers. Since the ability doesn’t necessarily have a color associated with it, we can assume green swords are linked to bearers with this strength.

That said, Tanjiro Kamado’s sword remains a mystery in the anime. In the episode “My Own Steel,” Hotaru Haganezuka, the swordsmith, believes Tanjiro will conjure a red weapon based on his hair and eyes. However, when he finally holds his sword, the Nichirin blade transforms into a pitch-black state, surprising Haganezuka and his master, Sakonji Urokodaki.

Even if the swordsmith isn’t exactly impressed with the final product, Urokodaki says, “You don’t see this pitch-black too often.” This statement could suggest the color’s hidden special meaning and is explained further in the manga. There could be more clarification for those who watch the anime in the Swordsmith Village Arc.
