Today is Wednesday, which means that it’s time for another edition of the Media Create‘s weekly charts, painting the portrait of the Japanese market between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9. This one is interesting, as it marks the debut of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate inevitably launched with a triumphant cavalcade in a time in which the Nintendo Switch is really going strong in the Japanese market, being the first to dethrone Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! which passed a million copies this week.

As a consequence, the Nintendo Switch sold 281,222 units in a week, which is over twice as many units as the prior week, pretty much sealing the deal on the “holiday sales battle” and we’re not even halfway through December.

That being said, the PS4 was no slouch with nearly 75,000 units sold in its fourth Holiday season in the country between PS4 and PS4 Pro combined. This result was achieved via an aggressive deal offering a 5,000 yen discount on purchases, alongside two downloadable games.

On the other hand, Just Cause 4 launches with disappointing sales, barely passing 16,000 units despite the fact that Japanese gamers do like open world titles.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see what kind of a tail Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have on the Japanese market. One thing is for sure: someone in Kyoto is toasting right now.
