Gotham Knights has finally arrived, albeit to mixed fanfare. But if you’re here because you like the idea of not suiting up as the Batman, then you’ve come to the right place. With four playable characters, there’s a good amount of variety to enjoy. So in this guide, we’re going to talk about the best character(s) in Gotham Knights.
The Characters of Gotham Knights
There are four playable characters in Gotham Knights to choose from, including Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. Every single one brings something different to the table and their unique special ability gives a player something to think about when switching between them. Add in a few classic villains and a criminal underworld, and that’s our recipe for all sorts of fun characters in Gotham City.
So let’s get to it, shall we?
Best Playable Character in Gotham Knights — Batgirl
With the ability to glide and maneuver like Batman combined with her hacking prowess, Batgirl is as good as any when it comes to playable characters in Gotham Knights. But rest assured, the gliding similarity is where our comparisons to Batman ends.
Simply put, her moveset is the easiest to get a feel for and once more, her hacking abilities cannot be overstated. Combine that with multiple useful skills and two excellent abilities, and you’re dealing with arguably the most complete character Gotham Knights has to offer.
At the end of the day, of course, this all comes down to player preference. But it’s difficult to look past the entire picture her skills and abilities help paint.
Now if you happen to hold another character a little more dearly, that’s quite alright! The option exists to change between characters as long as you’re back at the Belfry, our base of operations. So while we’re here, these following qualities make up our small honorable mention list:
- Nightwing: Evasive abilities.
- Robin: Stealth.
- Red Hood: Ranged Attacks.
Most Evil Character in Gotham Knights — Mr. Freeze
Look, the Arkham City boss fight between Batman and Mr. Freeze is undefeated. Nobody is here to dispute that. But for the longest time, Mr. Freeze has almost been the anti-hero of Gotham’s supervillains, riding the line between hopeful and desperate. In Gotham Knights, we see the version of a Freeze who has lost that hope; one who is long disconnected with the idea of desperation. And it finally turns him as cold as the suit that holds him.
As for the other villains, for what it’s worth, Talia al Ghul is exactly who we’ve known her to be. The Court of Owls is interesting but the game does not go deep enough with them. Freeze is evil, pure and truly.
Most Interesting Character in Gotham Knights — Harley Quinn
In our review, we described Harley Quinn as “mixing in a little bit of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop brand along with a dash of Joel Osteen and pre-politician Dr. Oz.” It makes for a fun set of side missions to see Quinn at perhaps her most dastardly of all the games we’ve seen her in. No longer in the Joker’s shadow. No longer doing everything in her power to help Mr. J. Just Quinn using her advanced education and dangerous mind to put everyone at risk. Our only wish is that she was a little more involved.
You won’t find everyone’s favorite modern-day anti-hero here.
Best Overall Character in Gotham Knights — Red Hood
For as incredible as the Mr. Freeze boss fight is in Arkham City, the use of Jason Todd as the titular Arkham Knight is arguably just as poor. Reduced to nothing but a very predictable plot advice despite the intriguing and well-executed cinematics along the way, it was refreshing to see a bit of depth in the Gotham Knights version of Jason Todd. Not to mention, just how supportive everyone else around him can be while he continues to seek necessary help. Oh, and the guns help.
Honorable mention, as always, goes to Alfred. Even if he’s included at this point simply to pull on our heart strings, he’s always Alfred. And we love him for that.
