In a statement released on Mar. 11, the ESA broke the news that the convention would be cancelled indefinitely due to rising concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

“Following increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 virus, we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation,” the company wrote. “We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold this event for our fans and supporters. But we know it’s the right decision based on the information that we have today.”

The company will be reaching out to E3 2020 attendees and exhibitors about receiving full refunds. Likewise, the company plans to explore online options for coordinating announcements and news that would have come out of the event in June.

The company ended the statement by saying that more updates on the state of the cancellation process, as well as updates on any other news regarding any online replacements for E3 2020’s events and announcements, could be found at and will be posted to https://www.e3expo.com/.

The news follows several cancellations and postponements of gatherings, as well as pull-outs by companies scheduled to attend said gatherings, related to the gaming industry in the face of the Coronavirus outbreak. Japan’s indie gaming convention BitSummit was also cancelled today, while big publishers like Sony have pulled out of conventions like GDC and PAX East.

Gatherings related to competitive gaming have been hit hard by concerns over the virus as well. The Overwatch League matches in China were cancelled indefinitely due to concerns over the virus, while the Pokémon Europe International Championships were cancelled indefinitely last week.
