Every year, a new Assassin’s Creed comes out in the fall, but it sounds like this year may be when all of that changes.

Rumors have been floating around that the next entry in the series won’t hit in 2016, but will instead move to 2017. According to sources from Kotaku, the reason for this is twofold: they want time to polish and improve the game, and they don’t want another situation like Unity on their hands.

Not much else is known about the new Assassin’s Creed, other than it being codenamed “Empires” and possibly taking place in ancient Egypt or Rome. There’s also apparently talks of trying to start another trilogy of games with this character in the vein of Ezio Auditore with the AC2 games. It’s possible that in place of a new game for this year, Watch Dogs 2 will take its place instead.
