According to a report from Eurogamer citing “multiple sources,” Nintendo is scheduled to end Wii U production this Friday, November 4, after the last deadline for orders passed. The Wii U launched in 2012 and served as a follow-up to Nintendo’s wildly successful Wii console.
From sales numbers accurate as of September 30, Nintendo reports 13.36 million units of Wii U hardware have been sold, as well as 92.35 million units of Wii U software. The Wii U is widely known as a sales disappointment, with Nintendo originally believing it would sell 100 million Wii Us.
Such an estimate likely took into account Nintendo’s track record with console sales: the Wii, again as of September 30, has sold a staggering 101.66 million units of hardware and 916.15 million units of software; the GameCube sold 21.74 million units of hardware and 208.57 million units of software.
From the NES through Nintendo’s portable line-up over the years, the Wii U has been by far the slowest seller of the bunch, the GameCube representing the closest numbers with a little less than twice the Wii U’s sales.
Though, Nintendo is poised for a comeback with their newest device, the Switch, scheduled to release in March 2017, which looks like a more powerful Wii U you can take on the go as well as game on at home. Nintendo has promised more details on the console are to come next year, but to not expect any significant announcements until then.
