This series has released games every year since 2009, so this will be a major change for Ubisoft. The Assassin’s Creed team posted a blog today on the subject. They thanked the fans for the well-received Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and teased the upcoming film based on the games.

We have an outstanding cast and crew that want to honor the rich lore of Assassin’s Creed and bring a fresh perspective to the ongoing battle between Assassins and Templars that’s fit for the big screen.

The team says that they are “stepping back and re-examining” the franchise. This came after poor feedback to Unity, which launched with several graphical and gameplay bugs.

We’ve also updated our development processes and recommitted to making Assassin’s Creed a premier open-world franchise. We’re taking this year to evolve the game mechanics and to make sure we’re delivering on the promise of Assassin’s Creed offering unique and memorable gameplay experiences that make history everyone’s playground.

The rumored 2017 Assassin’s Creed game would take place in Egypt, which would be a first for the time-travelling franchise. Ubisoft has not confirmed this game’s existence yet.

Even though there won’t be a game in the main franchise, there’s plenty of Assassin’s Creed coming in 2016. The movie will launch in December, and two games in the Chronicles spinoff series have already been released this year.
