No Man’s Sky ARG Points Toward Possible August Update

A return to the skies could soon be in order.
This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

No Man’s Sky has seen quite a few frustrated friends since its launch, but it’s been chugging along and offering additional content ever since its latest update in March. There’s been an alternate reality game going on for the last month, however, where fans have been receive special packages with cassettes numbered up to 16 and a healthy dose of puzzle that must be solved in-game. It’s a pretty wacky setup that’s been going on over at the No Man’s Sky subreddit, and it seems the entire point of the ARG has been, all along, to announce an update coming this August.

It all came in the form of a PDF discovered by players, which says the following:

“We want to extend our gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the Mercury Subroutine so far. We hope you have enjoyed the successful distribution of 180 Access IDs, and we hope you will also appreciate the other interesting artifacts we have in store for you going forward.”

“We intend to keep the process alive until the completion of Project Waking Titan in August. It is important to mention that we are very excited by the coming Phases 2 and 3. Input from the Mercury Subroutine will pave the way toward new experiences in version 1.3 of a familiar universe. We look forward to the successful conclusion of this ground-breaking experiment. Regards. S.M”

Essentially, the access IDs are in reference to individual copies of No Man’s Sky that have been given out through the game and version 1.3 means there’s a new update on the horizon. It stands to reason that the ARG has been meant to usher in a new age for the game all along, but there needed to be some sort of catalyst to keep fans interested. It seems this ARG, or the Mercury Subroutine, has been successful if that was the gambit indeed.

If you’re looking for additional No Man’s Sky content, you’ll likely find it with next month’s impending update, though there’s been no word as to what it actually contains.
