The Writer’s Guild of America honored Horizon: Zero Dawn with the award for Outstanding Achievement in Videogame Writing last night as part of their yearly awards. Guerrilla Games’ sci-fi masterpiece beat out nominees Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, and Madden NFL 18: Longshot to win the award.

Horizon: Zero Dawn follows the story of Aloy, a young woman and tribe outcast intent on finding the truth about her parentage and existence as she hunts robot dinosaurs and human bandits. Along the way, she discovers the large and complicated truths about her world as she is thrust into a hero role she never quite expected. The WGA specifically honored Narrative Director John Gonzalez, Lead Writer Benjamin McCaw, and writers Ben Schroder, Anne Toole, Dee Warrick, and Meg Jayanth. Chloe Burch voices Aloy, and the game features other excellent talent including John Macmillan and Lance Reddick.

Twinfinite gave Horizon: Zero Dawn a perfect 5/5 review and an Editor’s Choice designation, saying that the game “is a treat to every PS4 owner. Its magical world is a wonder to explore, it controls and looks exceptional, and the unique, modular build of its enemies ensures that combat never gets old.”

The WGA awards have traditionally focused on film, television, and radio writing, but introduced an award for video games in 2008. Past winners include The Last of Us, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

Horizon: Zero Dawn has been well-received on the awards circuit. The game was nominated for 10 awards at the DICE Awards, which will be held on February 22, and was nominated six times at The Game Awards, including for Best Narrative. While there is no news of Guerrilla Games’ next project and there is no official word regarding a sequel, an expansion for the game called The Frozen Wilds was released this past November.
