How to Block in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Recommended Videos

Combat in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is a tad different than you might expect it to be based on Ninja Theory’s other games. This time around it’s much more methodical, based around timing and planning. One of the most important moves in your repertoire is guarding, allowing you to block incoming enemy attacks. Luckily it’s easy enough to pull off a block in Hellblade, as all you have to do is hold down the R1 button on PS4, or whatever key you have it mapped to on PC.

A block won’t just work indefinitely, however, as enemies can launch heavy attacks that’ll break through your guard. This is especially true of bosses in Hellblade like Surtr who launches a heavy attack with almost every blow. Blocking plays another instrumental role with combat too, allowing you to activate parries and launch counter attacks.

If you hit the block button right as the enemy’s blow is landing, you’ll pull off a parry that deflects their attack. Follow this up with a fast or heavy strike and you’ll use a special attack that causes even more damage than normal. Make sure to use guarding liberally with the rest of your options to mix things up in combat and overcome the darkness.
