GenDesign, the team behind PS4 exclusive The Last Guardian and headed by Fumito Ueda, has updated its website with a new splash screen that appears to be concept art for an upcoming project.
Ueda has been pretty quiet since the launch of The Last Guardian back in 2015, only speaking with the media on rare occasions and staying tight-lipped on the studio’s next project.
What we do know is that back in mid-2018, speaking in an interview with Famitsu (translated by Gematsu), Ueda explained the team was in “a stage of various trials,” as the team was testing different ideas. Also, the project was “on the scale of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian” and “a completely new title, not a sequel.”
Certainly, if this latest concept art is anything to go by, the team’s next game looks unlike anything it’s done before; the style appears to represent a more futuristic setting. Perhaps, some sort of mech-inspired aesthetic?
Indeed, it looks like a world apart from a previous image shared by GenDesign that many supposed was indicative of his next project.
This week’s news comes by way of a Tweet the developer shared over the New Year period, which teased an image and included a link that revealed the new splash page that you see pictured above.
Happy New Year!
Thanks for all the immense support last year.
We look forward to a wonderful 2020 with everyone!https://t.co/RHZbVDXsGx pic.twitter.com/4OkprZ9cFp— genDESIGN (@genDESIGN_Inc) December 31, 2019
