Gone are the days of accidentally failing missions for leaving the mission area. Unlike previous games in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Origins allows players to juggle multiple quests.
In IGN’s gameplay preview, protagonist Bayek stumbles upon a geographer who had his maps stolen. Afterwards, players are given designated investigation areas on the map, but they aren’t forced to immediately pursue their task. Speaking to IGN in the gameplay preview, Director Ashraf Ismail said Assassin’s Creed: Origins allows players to engage in multiple side quests at any time as the team focused on creating a believable living, breathing world.
“Because we have a world that’s really alive and big, we wanted to make sure that all the frictions of ‘you’ve left the zone’ or ‘you’ve been detected’ are not conditions that fail quests or missions. So if you’re in the middle of this investigation and you happen to see a target from a nearby quest come by and you decide ‘I wanna finish this quest now because my target is there,’ you can do that. You can come by to the step of this quest without ever missing a beat. So the game doesn’t reset itself.”
Additionally, Ismail said NPCs explore the game world normally as part of their daily routines, including your friends from side-quests and assassination targets. “They have needs. They need to work, they need to go to the bathroom. Seriously.” Because enemies now have a certain day-to-day patrol route or routine, Bayek can sleep at a certain location in anticipation of his target.
Also worth pointing out is Ismail’s statement that getting detected in quests won’t instantly fail the mission, which we’re unsure if it also applies to eavesdropping quests.
Developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Assassin’s Creed: Origins launches on October 27 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The game has various limited editions up for pre-order.
