Overwatch Hero D.Va Is Trading off Her Defensive Options for Powerful New Abilities

"Nerf this!"
This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Unlike most Overwatch heroes, D.Va has seen a lot of changes over the past few months. She started out as a relatively normal tank before eventually becoming a must pick in the meta. Following her 400 armor buff, Blizzard scaled her down which ultimately left her out of the competitive scene until Season 5 came along. While it seems like D.Va’s finally found her place in the current Overwatch dive meta, Blizzard has some bigger plans for this Korean tank hero.

Taking to the game’s official forums, principal designer Geoff Goodman revealed that they have been testing some significant internal changes for D.Va. In exchange for heavily nerfing her defensive capabilities, she’s now much more powerful and even has a new skill. Here are all the things Blizzard has planned for the hero:

Defense Matrix: Energy drain increased by 2x. This means her effective uptime for this ability has been reduced by 50%.
Boosters: D.Va can now use her Fusion Cannons while flying.
New ability – Micro Missiles: D.Va launches a long salvo of small missiles that explode on impact, dealing damage in a small radius around them. This ability can be used while using her other abilities or firing her Fusion Cannons.

With these changes, Blizzard aims to give the Overwatch tank a much more aggressive playstyle while toning down her Defense Matrix. While the ability is still extremely useful, the reduced uptime means that you won’t be able to use it nearly as often anymore. However, her new skills allow for some other options when fighting against heroes like Pharah.

Goodman claimed that they want players to rely less on her Defense Matrix and make her more fun to play. In doing this, they just wanted to nerf the ability and not D.Va herself as a hero. Blizzard hasn’t stated when these changes will hit the Overwatch PTR, but there’s a chance we’ll see it in the next patch.
