Destiny’s upcoming expansion, Rise of Iron, will be introducing several new features to the game. There will be a brand new Record Book to track your progress and grant rewards, a new raid challenge, and a new take on Artifacts.
During an interview with Game Informer, Bungie revealed that on top of the usual Artifacts players have already grown accustomed to, the studio will be introducing eight brand new “class agnostic” ones into the fold. Each of these new Artifacts will represent one of the fallen Lords of Iron including the likes of Felwinter and Jolder.
Unlike their peers, these new pieces of gear must be obtained through a new NPC named Tyra Karn. When you’re ready to start collecting, she will provide you quests to complete in the Plaguelands (Rise of Iron’s new area) to earn the favor of the Lords of Iron through mighty deeds done in their memory. Once complete, players will earn Iron Lords’ Legacy, an item that can be traded to Tyra Karn for a new Artifact. Collecting them all won’t be so quick, though, as she will only have three to choose from per week, and it’s not clear how many will rotate out during reset. According to Bungie, players an expect to collect all eight over the course of as many weeks.
They seem to definitely be worth the effort, though, as each one will provide a “game-changing ability” that represents the Lord of Iron the Artifact is related to. Â One example given was that of Jolder. She was a brute who had no issue charging into battle head-first, so her specific Artifact eliminates the sprint recharge. There will be other special perks such making enemies fight for you after a melee attack, trading your super for better stats and more grenades, and other boons of that nature.
Bungie shared that you will be able to equip these Artifacts alongside an exotic, so no need to choose between one or the other, as well as any subclass. This is meant to add more variety for your builds so you can further fine-tune your playstyle.
It will be interesting to see just how much these new items will change how Destiny is played. You’ll be able to find out for yourself when the Rise of Iron expansion releases for the PS4 and Xbox One on Sept. 20.
