Fortnite, still in early access, had already enjoyed a positive reception to the base game, but the addition of a Battle Royale mode a la PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) has seen its popularity skyrocket. Despite the fact that the mode launched without four-person squads or duo options, the free-to-play nature of the game and the fact that it is available on console (PUBG is still PC-only) has surely helped boost its player base. The option to play in squads has since been introduced in the latest patch.

The launch of the new mode has been in the spotlight since Bluehole Studios, developer of PUBG, released a statement outlining their concerns that the game had copied PUBG’s Battle Royale formula too closely. PUBG has emerged as a smash hit since it released in early access back in March. It is still well ahead of Fortnite in terms of concurrent daily players, having recently beaten DOTA 2 for the daily record according to Steam.

You can download Fortnite on PS4, Xbox One, and PC and play the game without having to buy the Founders Pack required for the base game.
