The GOP Tied The Legend of Zelda to the American Tax Code in the Most Ridiculous Way

A major centerpiece of the GOP platform and agenda since 2010 has been tax reform by way of lowering taxes and simplifying the tax code. The issue of taxes, which has raged in perpetuity since the dawn of the nation, has again been raised in the US House of Representative by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. This time around the official GOP website is hoping to appeal to the 155 million gamers in America to get excited about Tax Reform.

In an article published today titled “What Do the Legend of Zelda and the American Tax Code Have in Common?,” the GOP points out that the game was released in the same exact year the last major reform to the American tax code was signed into law. Talk about a stretch, right?

“The Legend of Zelda series is Nintendo’s best-selling video game franchise enjoyed by more than two generations of gamers,” the article reads, including a helpful link to the first, very 1980’s commercial for The Legend of Zelda — complete with a terrible rap.  “The action-adventure game was released in 1986, only one year after Nintendo’s founding in 1985. And you know what else was released in 1986? Yeah, you do. The last major reform to the American tax code was signed into law in 1986”.

The article continues for several more paragraphs to explain the GOP’s vision for tax reform in the US with no further mention of Nintendo’s hit title. However, while the US government hasn’t signed any major tax reform into law in 31 years, Nintendo has released over 20 different titles in the Legend of Zelda series including their latest Game of the Year contender, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild.
