Valve isn’t looking to bring commercial product advertisements to Steam, in fact, they believe it would be a bad business decision despite the possible revenue.
When asked if Steam could ever see advertisements for products like Doritos, Valve’s Erik Johnson told GameSpot, “We don’t see a case for that ever getting user value, so we wouldn’t do it.” Johnson continued to explain that such advertising would be ineffective, creating a negative user experience with little purpose. “I don’t think that those ever work, either. To take it a step further, I don’t think anybody buys Doritos as a result of that.”
With eyes on the future, Johnson says that Valve is more focused on creating algorithms that help users connect with the right games. “We tend to focus on long-term relationships,” he continued, casting aside advertisements once more. “It would be a bad business decision, let alone just dumb.”
