Legendary Pokémon Raids Are Finally Coming to Pokémon GO

Get ready, trainers! This is not a drill!

For quite some time Pokémon GO players have been trying to figure out when legendary Pokémon would finally make their way to the massively popular mobile game. Today Niantic has finally confirmed that the time has come for trainers to join forces for legendary raids that will unleash the powerful, rare Pokémon they have long been waiting for. Niantic announced that the feature will come as yet another way to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Pokémon GO and they will be using the correlating Pokémon GO Fest to bring legendaries into the game.

“On July 22, thousands of Trainers in Grant Park for Pokémon GO Fest and the millions of others around the world will be working together to unlock in-game bonuses for the entire Pokémon GO community,” Niantic explained in a blog post on their site. “If they manage to catch enough Pokémon during the Pokémon GO Fest Challenge Windows, the first Legendary Pokemon will be revealed in Grant Park. If the Trainers in Chicago succeed in defeating the Legendary Pokémon , that Pokémon will start appearing in Raid Battles around the world, after Pokemon GO Fest.”

The announcement was also accompanied by a video that highlights other new features coming to the game this summer. The video shows off one player earning new gym badges while another group of players is preparing to go head-to-head in a team battle. The highlight of the video, however, is when it depicts the energy surging through the crowd of players hoping to emerge successful from the legendary raid.

Legendary Pokemon

While Pokémon GO has had its fair share of missteps since launch, its commercials and advertising have always excelled at pitching the game as a fun way to bring entire cities together to catch their favorite Pokémon . The legendary raids could finally be exactly what the mobile game was missing to bring that vision to life. Of course, the strangers hugging each other might be a bit of a stretch but it doesn’t seem too far fetched that tons of people would be rushing to a central location after receiving news of a legendary raid happening near them. Just think about all the stampedes that broke out over Pokémon like Charizard and Snorlax.

If you can’t make it to Grant Park but you want to see all the action go down, you can follow the legendary raid on Twitter through the hashtag #PokemonGOFest or you can check out the official livestreams that will be broadcast on Twitch and YouTube.

So level up your favorite Pokémon and stock up on all the items you could possibly need because powerful legendaries will finally be ready to take on your team this summer.
