To Honor Notre-Dame, Ubisoft Is Giving Away Free Copies of Assassin’s Creed: Unity

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Several days ago, the world mourned when Notre-Dame de Paris caught fire. While the fire claimed the cathedral’s spire, firefighters managed to save most of the building and its contents. The cause remains a mystery, but restoration will begin soon, and Ubisoft is offering gamers who never visited the cathedral a chance to see what it looked before this devastating turn of events.

Starting today, anyone with a UPlay account can log in and obtain a free copy of Assassin’s Creed: Unity. The game, which takes place in Paris, includes a digital recreation of Notre-Dame that players can explore.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity’s Notre-Dame is fully realized and faithful to the original building. According to a 2014 article from The Verge, level artist Caroline Miousse “spent literally years fussing over the details of the building.” She worked with texture artists to make sure the cathedral was one-hundred percent accurate, right down to the placement of each brick, and she even asked historians to help her determine what paintings hung on the walls during the French Revolution, which is when the game takes place.

The only historically inaccurate part of the recreation is that its iconic spire didn’t exist during the revolution. However, she added it at the request of game testers. Still, thanks to Miousse’s hard work, many gamers can experience the majesty of Notre-Dame de Paris, even though the real-world building won’t be returned to its original glory for at least the next five years.

To claim your free copy of Assassin’s Creed: Unity, visit the official announcement page or the Ubisoft Store. This offer will only last until April 25th at 3 am.

However, Ubisoft’s contributions to Notre-Dame don’t end with a free copy of Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Ubisoft Montreal stated in a press release it has donated €500,000 (approximately $565,140) to help with the restoration efforts.
