In the past, DICE has hinted at the eventual inclusion of female soldiers in Battlefield 1’s multiplayer, and now it’s been officially confirmed thanks to a tweet on Battlefield’s official Twitter account showing off some key art for the new DLC featuring a female solider.

During WWI, 15 all-female units were formed alongside male units in Russia, with the most famous dubbed the 1st Russian Women’s Battalion of Death. Their inclusion was achieved in part by the successful petitioning of Russia women to join regular military units and due to the propaganda value the Russian government felt women would deliver while serving on the Eastern front. The total estimated number of female solider in these battalions was approximately 5,000 by Fall 1917, but only two units were deployed to the front while the others served elsewhere.

In a followup tweet, DICE explains the 1st Women’s Battalion of Death will be represented by the Russian Scout class in-game. The DLC will also feature new maps including the Battle of Galicia and Operation Albion and some new weapons. New vehicles and game modes are likely on the way as well.

More details for In the Name of the Tsar will be shown off at EA Play on June 10, with the DLC promised to release for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 sometime in “Late Summer”.
