The popular PlayStation consumer event often referred to as PSX will not be happening this year, Worldwide Studios Chairman, Shawn Layden reports during an episode of the PlayStation Blogcast. PSX started in 2014 and has happened every year since, usually at the beginning of December as a way to celebrate all things PlayStation.
Layden stated, “For 2018, I know this is going to be a disappointment to some people, but we decided to not hold PlayStation Experience this year.” PSX has been an event in which fans have many expectations going in, and it seems this year, there isn’t enough to show to justify bringing so many people together for the event.
“We have a lot of progress that we’re making in our games; And we’re seeing that coming out. Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we’re looking down to 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone.”
Layden goes on, “But we wouldn’t have enough to bring people all together in some location in North America to have that event. We don’t want to set the expectations really high and not deliver on it. It’s a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience.”
This is sad news, because every year, PSX was a way for thousands of fans to gather and celebrate their love of PlayStation. However, after last year’s 2017 PSX event, Sony was met with some disappointment from fans after the usual keynote event was replaced with a casual chat between developers.
From the looks of things, PSX may not be cancelled forever, but maybe held again once Sony has enough to show – After all, these events are expensive to host and if they’re disappointing fans, it’s understandable why they would want to hold off this year.
Hopefully, this isn’t the end of PSX because it truly is a marvelous event. It takes all the excitement of E3, but scales it way down, to a tight-knit audience, making it easier to get the most out of the event.
