The loot fest will have to wait.

EA confirmed today that BioWare’s blockbuster RPG Anthem will be delayed to 2019, confirming multiple reports that the multiplayer shooter would not make its release date for this year. This news comes on the tail end of a report by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, both BioWare’s Edmonton and Austin dev teams have shifted to working on Anthem.

According to the report, morale at EA properties is low due to recent developments creating tons of pressure for BioWare, brought on by critique for EA following the infamous release of Star Wars Battlefront II. Additionally, many within BioWare worry that the continued existence of the company is reliant on Anthem’s success, as EA has infamously shut down numerous well-established development teams in the past.

Anthem, which was revealed at E3 2017, announced a Fall 2018 release date, but now, EA’s finance chief Blake Jorgensen is backpedaling. In a statement to investors announcing the delay, Jorgenson told the Wall Street Journal, via Polygon, “It’s not a delay… People are trying to create a story.”

According to EA, this is more of a “scheduling matter” rather than a full-blown delay.

Hopefully Anthem can meet its new release date and succeed so BioWare can continue to make great games.
