NPD Analyst Reaffirms Strong Spider-Man Sales Following Metacritic Score

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Spider-Man PS4 is out in just a few short days and the reviews have dropped just this morning to more than positive reception, with Insomniac’s open-world game currently sitting at a score of 87 on Metacritic. The warm response from critics has prompted a reaffirmation of a previous prediction from NPD analyst Matt Piscatella that Spider-Man is likely to end the year as a top 10 best-seller.

Being one of the early tent-pole titles for the fall season, Spider-Man is expected to perform extremely well, especially when you look at the audience that the web-slinger has under his belt. Kids who might have just experienced their first Spider-Man movie with the recent release of Homecoming and older fans of the superhero games are more than likely very hyped for this release. It’s an entirely new and unique Spidey experience that nobody has seen before and according to Piscatella, this iteration of Spider-Man, with its high review scores and “current brand strength,” will make it reach #10 on the annual full game sales charts for the U.S.

Mat Piscatella actually predicted that the game would perform well before even seeing the reviews this morning. Back in July of this year, Piscatella wrote up an article detailing what video games would make the top 10 list of best-selling titles throughout the year. As you can see, he lists Spider-Man at the number 10 spot with Monster Hunter right above it. After seeing its high 80’s Metacritic score, Piscatella still believes that this sandbox adventure will make it on the list once the year is up:

Considering that Spider-Man PS4 is coming out so late into the year, it would be a huge achievement for Sony Interactive Entertainment, Insomniac Games, and even Marvel Studios themselves for this game to receive such high sales numbers even after some pretty heavy hitters already releasing earlier this year like Monster Hunter: World, Far Cry 5, and God of War. Also, there some other titles out this year that can mix this list up and potentially dethrone Spider-Man such as Octopath Traveler, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Dragon Quest XI. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see once the year comes to a close.
