Square Enix Says There’s “a Chance” Final Fantasy XV Comes to Nintendo Switch

Earlier this week, Square Enix strongly implied it was considering bringing Final Fantasy XV — either the original game or the recently announced mobile version — to the Nintendo Switch. Despite saying at the time he had nothing more to add after that hint, Director Hajime Tabata has now added just a bit more fuel to the fire.

“There is certainly a chance. It’s certainly not zero,” Tabata told IGN of the prospects of Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition coming to Switch. “Obviously we’d have to think about what the meaning and what the significance of bringing this to Switch would be. You know, whether people would want to play it and whether it would be the right thing to do for our team.”

Continuing, Tabata noted that Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition “doesn’t actually have controller support.” Square Enix wouldn’t necessarily need to add it in, however, as some Switch games are playable using only the console’s touchscreen only, which restricts them to only being playable in the console’s undocked handheld mode.

It was Tuesday when Tabata said Square was thinking about bringing Final Fantasy XV to a console that rhymed with “Twitch,” clearly meaning the Switch. That statement came hot on the heels of Square’s Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition for mobile phones, but Tabata hadn’t made it clear if the studio was eyeing Nintendo’s console as a home for the mobile spinoff or the original game, which would almost certainly need to be graphically downgraded to run on the underpowered Switch.

Tabata’s statements to IGN now clarify that it would be the mobile game, if anything, that Square brings to Switch.

The developer also mentioned all the way back in February that there were a lot of Switch fans on the Final Fantasy XV team, but he added that they had not even tested the game on Nintendo’s console.
