If you were looking forward to Psychonauts 2 in 2018, you’ll have to put that dream out to pasture, unfortunately. It looks like Double Fine Productions has pushed it out past its previously confirmed release window for 2018 to an unspecified date.
Project lead Zak McClendon clarified that the reason for the delay was that the team now knows “a lot more” about the size and scope of the game, and obviously that means it’s going to take a lot longer to put it together. “The less good news is because of that,” McClendon explained, “we now know that it is not going to be done in 2018.” It’s a hard blow, Psychonauts fans, but that’s how it has to be for now.
“We are making great progress, and we do know about how long it’s going to take, but we don’t really want to say anything until we can give a firm date for people. We don’t want it to be a thing where it’s like, ‘We think it’s here, but then it might be here or there.’ We want to know exactly where we’re going to land.”
The development update did have some good news, however, in the shape of the fact that protagonist Raz’s family will not be named and modeled for an appearance in Psychonauts 2. You can check some that out in the video below. Hopefully we’ll hear more about a new release window for the game in the coming months, whenever that may be.
