Today, during a presentation part of Summer Game Fest, Sony Interactive Entertainment head of worldwide marketing & consumer experience Eric Lempel shot down persistent rumors about upcoming PS5 pre-orders that some alleged would come this week.
Lempel was asked about the rumors by host Geoff Keighley and was rather clear about the fact we shouldn’t expect pre-orders to go live without notice.
“No, definitely not now. We don’t know what happened there. We had nothing to do with it. I got a message from someone saying, “people are lining up at the stores” and we had no idea why.
I think it’s safe to say for the viewers, “we’ll let you know when pre-orders will happen.” We will let you know. It’s not going to happen with a minute’s notice.
We’re going to, at some point, let you know when you can pre-order a PlayStation 5. Please don’t feel like you have to go, run out, and line up anywhere.
You’ll receive official notice of how that will work. How that happened, Who did it.. Wasn’t us, so…”
For now, all we know is that the PS5 will release sometime in the Holiday season 2020 and that it’ll come in two editions, standard and digital-only with no Blu-ray Drive. No other hints about timing have been provided by Sony.
In the meanwhile, you can check out the reveal of the hardware and plenty of official pictures.
