PlayStation 4 Media Player Update Adds 4K Support

On March 28, the PlayStation 4 Media Player will receive an update that adds 4K playback support to the PlayStation 4 Pro, a post on the PlayStation Blog revealed.

For the 4K videos to be compatible, they will have to be saved in mp4 format and saved on a USB stick or home server. Once you open up the application, they can be played easily from your storage format of choice.

Anyone that owns a PlayStation VR headset, in addition to PS4 Pro, will be able to play 4K VR video content via the Media Player. “PS VR’s display resolution is 1920 x RGB x 1080, therefore 4K VR videos will be displayed in a higher image quality compared to HD VR videos. Capture stunning 360 degree 4K footage, and then immerse yourself in that footage in VR at home – just as if you’re right back in the scene you shot.”

The Media Player’s 4K update is in addition to the 4K video that can be played via the Netflix and YouTube apps and the PlayStation 4 Pro’s 4K streaming capabilities.

The PlayStation 4’s Media Player will receive the 4K update tomorrow, March 28.
