Nintendo’s official character description reads as follows:

“All around sporty, whether it’s tennis or baseball, soccer or car racing, he does everything cool. As a matter of fact, he also seems to have worked as a plumber a long time ago… ”

Mario’s days as a plumber haven’t been a focal point of any of his games since 1983’s Mario Bros. Still, from his iconic overalls to his preferred method of transportation (via warp pipe), the profession has played a huge role in the way players perceive the character.

The description mentions his many athletic achievements as well, although notably absent is his time as a doctor and chef. His accomplishments on the diamond, tee box, tennis court, and raceway are even listed above his passion for saving Princess Peach!

In case you were wondering, Luigi has presumably hung up the boots as well. His description says nothing of plumbing either, focusing on his struggle as a younger twin.

With Super Mario Odyssey just two months from release, Mario’s utility in the workforce will be center stage once again. In the recently revealed Luncheon Kingdom, the hero dons his chef outfit originating in 1992’s Yoshi’s Cookie. He’ll also dress up as a safari member, construction worker, and football player.

Despite his formal retirement, in the hearts of the people Mario will always be a plumber first and foremost. It seems that even in the world of fiction, Father Time remains undefeated.
