Paladins developer Hi-Rez Studios showed off nearly an hour of Paladins: Battlegrounds pre-alpha gameplay at the studio’s Hi-Rez Expo 2018 event, after announcing the new battle royale mode earlier this week. The video below contains two full matches of the new mode, alongside commentary.
Like other titles in the genre, 100 players within teams of up to four drop onto a large map to scavenge for better gear and become the last team standing. Despite the similarities to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, including the name which Hi-Rez President Stew Chisam defended in comments this week, there are a few differences.
Since Paladins is a hero-based shooter, players will be able to choose from a pool of eight random heroes before selecting a section of the map to warp into. Not every part of the map is available at first, but teams warp into together and everyone can see where other teams have deployed. Players can also turn into chickens when knocked down, allowing them to scurry back to teammates to be revived.
Paladins: Battlegrounds will be free-to-play for all players sometime in 2018, while its hero shooter counterpart Paladins: Champions of the Realm is currently free-to-play in beta on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
