GameStop Pauses Its Unlimited Used Games Service

Temporarily on hold.
This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

GameStop launched a retail service last week called PowerPass, which allowed gamers to pay $60 every six months in exchange for unlimited access to pre-owned games. This essentially turned GameStop into a kind of library where you can pay to take out any games you want to play. At the end of your six months, you’d be allowed to keep one. The service was met with a very positive response from gamers but, alas, the service has been halted. GameStop has now put the PowerPass feature temporarily on hold. Two employees reported to Kotaku that all signs promoting the feature have been taken down and stored away. Exactly why the service has been halted has not been officially announced but the employees have suggested it may be due to the store’s antiquated computers not being able to handle the demand. A GameStop spokesperson told Kotaku: “We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified. We feel this is the right thing to do for now to ensure we are able to provide our guests an exceptional service.” It has not been stated when the service will resume but those whop have already paid for the service haven’t been forgotten about. “For those guests who have already purchased the service, we will allow them to bring the pass, and video game they have checked-out, back to receive a full refund,” said the spokesperson. “In addition, we will allow them to pick out any Pre-Owned game for free.”
