Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo Switch

Super Mario Odyssey is the Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Game

Nintendo keeps printing money.

Super Mario Odyssey was always supposed to be one of the Nintendo Switch’s “killer apps,” but the red plumber’s first game on the hybrid console managed to exceed Nintendo’s lofty expectations. Today, Nintendo released an earnings report revealing that Super Mario Odyssey sold slightly over nine million copies by the end of 2017. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe came shortly behind, selling a little over seven million, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 followed, selling roughly seven and five million copies respectively. While all of these titles sold well, Mario Odyssey’s nine million mark is particularly impressive considering that it released in October, months after the other titles.

Super Mario Odyssey’s massive acclaim through both sales and critical reception is a great sign for the future of Mario. No one was scared that he was going away anytime soon, but Super Mario Odyssey’s sales show that the public’s interest in Nintendo’s Italian mascot is higher than it has been in a long time. Not only are Super Mario Odyssey’s sales a win for Nintendo, but they are also a win for single-player games in general. Star Wars Battlefront 2, another 2017 release predicted as a huge seller, sold about the same as Odyssey despite its popular source material and being available on more consoles. Nintendo has so far struck gold with the Nintendo Switch, and Super Mario Odyssey’s strong sales are icing on the cake for Nintendo’s otherworldly 2017.
