In addition to promising to put the NES Classic Edition on sale again in 2018, Nintendo has also announced plans to sell it successor, the SNES Classic Edition next year.
In a press release, Nintendo wrote that “incredible demand” for the SNES Classic Edition, the company will ship more units in 2018. This is a change to Nintendo’s previous plans, which called for the SNES Classic Edition to be sold only through the end of 2017.
Twinfinite reported yesterday that Nintendo would ship more units than it originally planned, but it wasn’t clear at that time that this meant continued sales in the next calendar year. “Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves,” the company wrote in its statement.
Predecessor NES Classic Edition launched during the 2016 holiday and immediately sold out virtually everywhere, becoming impossible to find for the duration of its initial run. Nintendo initially said it would not produce more NES Classics, but it now plans to do just that in 2018.
Acutely aware of how hard-to-find that system was on store shelves and the fan backlash that created when scalper prices spiked on online reselling sites, Nintendo has seemed intent not to repeat that fiasco. The company announced in August that “a significant amount of additional [SNES Classic Edition] systems will be shipped to stores for launch day, and throughout the balance of the calendar year.”
The SNES Classic Edition releases on September 29 for $79.99 and comes with 21 pre-loaded vintage Super Nintendo games.
