Nintendo has revealed that, in order to keep up with the high demand for Switch consoles throughout March, the company opted to ship a large number of units via plane rather than boat. Nintendo is no doubt pleased that demand for the Switch is so high, but it has been difficult to ensure there are enough units available to buy.

As The Wall Street Journal reports, a Nintendo spokesperson stated: We carried some of the Switches by plane in March to serve our customers more promptly.” New shipments of Switch consoles are once again being delivered via ships.

Delivering cargo by air may be faster but it is also costly. Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda told Wall Street Journal “Air is a big profit-squeezer because it could cost additional 5,000 yen per unit,” this is about $45/£35. Exactly where these shipments were taken is unknown but the most likely destinations are the US and Europe.

The Switch has been very well received by gamers and this has only been increased by the release of the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Sales of Switch stock have been selling out fast and demand doesn’t seem to ne decreasing anytime soon. Nintendo announced in a recent earnings report that it intends to ship 10 million more units during the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2018.
