In an interview with Game Informer, Octopath Traveler Producer and Division Executive at Square Enix, Tomoya Asano, said that there are additional Switch titles being developed by the company.
“There are several other titles that we’re currently working on for Switch,” Asano told Game Informer. “If you could just wait a bit longer, we’ll work with Nintendo and announce them in the future.”
When will we get to see them, though? According to Asano, that’s up to Switch owners.
“If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch,” Asano told Game Informer. “Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler.”
By this, it would seem that the future of Square Enix’s growth on the platform is dependent on the performance of the upcoming Switch title, Octopath Traveler. During Game Informer’s time spent talking with the team behind Octopath Traveler, Acquire, and Squre Enix, Asano said that the team became its own Square Enix division in April.
“Square Enix has decided that it wants to focus on original titles for the Switch,” Asano said.
Asano made no mention of what kind of sales numbers Octopath Traveler needs to hit to bring their other currently-being-developed games to the Switch. He also made no mention of when these potential announcements with Nintendo might occur. One thing is clear, though: Square Enix wants a piece of the Nintendo Switch cake.
Asano is a producer on Octopath Traveler and has been a producer on many other Square Enix titles. Most notably, the Bravely Default series on 3Ds, but he’s also the producer behind Final Fantasy III and IV on the DS.
For those not familiar, Octopath Traveler is a turn-based, Japanese RPG coming to the Nintendo Switch next month, on July 13. The game follows eight different characters, hence “Octopath,” who each begin their journey in a different way. The graphics are described as 2.5D and mix SNES 16-bit art with polygonal environments and effects. If you’re interested in trying the game out before it releases next month, there is a demo on the Nintendo eShop currently available for free.
